After qualifying as a general nurse in 1984, Susie Murphy discovered her passion for prenatal and postnatal care and trained to be a midwife in 1987. Since then, she has specialised in community midwifery and now has thirty years of experience in parenting education and facilitating groups.
As an independent midwife, Susie Murphy is a strong advocator of the importance of both prenatal and postnatal care. She is a specialist exercise coach and has a published book, which details the benefits of aquanatal exercise, with a strong focus on pelvic floor and aquatic exercise classes. Her interest in parent education provides the basis for several of the taught workshops at the Birkenshaw Midwifery Clinic, which cover key issues regarding the care of a newborn, early days as a new parent, infant feeding and the importance of postnatal mental health.
These important areas of study led Susie to become a finalist in the General Practice Awards for Innovation and Practice and her continued desire to share her wealth of knowledge led her to be filmed for the STV Baby Diaries, where she led a parenthood session for antenatal couples.
Having qualified as a medical acupuncturist in 2005, Susie remains a strong advocator of the importance of medical acupuncture and its ability to provide pain relief, relaxation, and fertility help. The acupuncture treatment offered at the clinic can be a great alternative to pain medication that many expectant mothers do not wish to take during pregnancy. Acupuncture therapy can provide relief for various ailments during pregnancy and can be a great source of relaxation in those final months.
Susie offers one-to-one or couple sessions on antenatal education, where first-time parents can receive help and advice on a range of important issues. Susie also offers workshops that focus on birth preparation, antenatal check-ups and postnatal mental health concerns.
